Refrigerator Maintenance Guide

Proper refrigerator maintenance extends lifespan, improves efficiency, and prevents costly repairs. In Arizona's extreme climate, maintenance is especially critical.

Maintenance Schedule

Clean condenser coils

Every 3-4 months (monthly during summer)critical

Dust and debris on coils force the compressor to work harder. Use a vacuum with brush attachment or coil cleaning brush.

Arizona Note: Arizona dust accumulates faster. During summer, dirty coils in hot garages are the #1 cause of compressor failure.

Check and clean door gaskets

Monthlycritical

Clean gaskets with mild soap and water. Check for cracks or gaps that allow cold air to escape.

Arizona Note: Extreme heat can cause gaskets to dry out and crack faster. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to keep them supple.

Replace water filter

Every 3-4 monthsrecommended

Old filters reduce water flow and ice production. Follow manufacturer recommendations.

Arizona Note: Arizona hard water clogs filters faster. Replace every 3 months rather than the typical 6 months.

Clean interior and check temperature

Monthlyrecommended

Wipe down shelves and check that temperature is at 37-40°F for refrigerator, 0°F for freezer.

Check and clear drain line

Every 6 monthsrecommended

Clogged drain lines cause water buildup and ice accumulation in the freezer.

Level the refrigerator

Annually or after movingoptional

An unlevel refrigerator affects door sealing and can cause operational issues.

Arizona Climate Considerations

Arizona's unique conditions require special attention for refrigerator maintenance:

  • Ensure at least 2 inches of clearance on all sides for heat dissipation
  • Consider relocating garage refrigerators to an insulated area
  • Monitor temperature more frequently during heat waves
  • Install a garage refrigerator kit if unit is in an unconditioned space

Seasonal Maintenance Tips

Summer

  • Increase condenser coil cleaning to monthly
  • Verify refrigerator is in coolest possible location
  • Consider slightly lower temperature settings
  • Monitor closely during heat waves (115°F+)

Monsoon

  • Use surge protectors to protect against lightning damage
  • Check for moisture intrusion after heavy rains
  • Be prepared for power outages - keep freezer full for thermal mass

Winter

  • Garage refrigerators may struggle in cold weather too
  • Standard maintenance schedule is usually sufficient
